PEARLAND WINS OVER MIDWAY!
AUSTIN, Texas (5/30/2026) — Pearland captured the 2026 UIL Class 6A Division I state championship on Saturday, defeating defending champion Midway 6-3 in a hard-fought title game at McCombs Field in Austin. The Oilers built an early lead and withstood a late Panthers rally to claim the program's fourth state softball championship and first since 2023. Pearland finished the season with an impressive 38-6 record, while Midway closed its championship campaign at 35-6-1.
The Oilers controlled the game from the start, jumping out to a 6-0 advantage behind timely hitting and strong pitching. Pearland capitalized on scoring opportunities throughout the afternoon, putting pressure on Midway's defense while senior ace Madelyn Guzman kept one of Texas' top offenses quiet. Guzman carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and consistently worked out of trouble, giving Pearland the cushion it needed entering the final frame.
Midway refused to go away quietly. The Panthers finally broke through late, recording six hits and scoring three runs to make things interesting in the seventh inning. Junior Kallei Alvarado led the offense with two hits, two RBIs, and a double, while Lilly Davis added an RBI and Peyton Phillip, Taylor Kasten, and Amaya Locke each contributed a hit. With the tying run at the plate, Pearland's defense held firm as Guzman recorded the final strikeout to end the comeback attempt.
Despite the loss, Midway capped another remarkable season by reaching the state championship after entering the tournament as the defending 6A Division I champions. Pearland's experienced roster and championship poise proved to be the difference, as the Oilers celebrated another state title while denying the Panthers back-to-back championships. The matchup showcased two of Texas' premier softball programs and provided a memorable finish to the 2026 high school softball season.
